Morning flight to Lanzhou. Drive to Zhangye (4 hours).

Zhangye Danxia Rainbow Mountains

Full day at the Danxia National Geological Park — surreal striped mountains in reds, yellows, and blues.

Drive to Jiayuguan

Drive to Jiayuguan. Visit the Fort — the westernmost point of the Great Wall. Overhanging Great Wall section.

Drive to Dunhuang

Drive across the Gobi to Dunhuang (5 hours). Evening: camel ride and sunset on Mingsha Singing Sand Dunes.

Mogao Caves

Full day at the Mogao Caves — 492 cave temples with murals and statues spanning 1,000 years. UNESCO World Heritage.

Dunhuang to Turpan

Morning train/flight to Turpan. Afternoon: Jiaohe Ancient City ruins.

Flaming Mountains, Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, ancient karez underground water system. Grape Valley.

Drive to Urumqi

Drive to Urumqi. Visit Xinjiang Regional Museum (mummies). Heavenly Lake (Tianchi) if time permits.

Fly to Kashgar

Morning flight to Kashgar. Afternoon: Kashgar Old City walk, Id Kah Mosque.

Visit the Grand Bazaar (livestock market if Sunday), Abakh Hoja Tomb, old city craftsmen workshops.

Karakoram Highway — Lake Karakul

Drive the Karakoram Highway to Lake Karakul (3,600m) at the base of Muztagh Ata (7,546m). Return to Kashgar.

Flight to Urumqi for international connection.
