Historical Sites

Luoyang's Longmen Grottoes are one of China's three great Buddhist cave sites — 100,000 statues carved into a river cliff over 500 years. The 17-meter Vairocana Buddha is said to bear the face of Empress Wu Zetian. Nanjing's historical sites span a later era — the Ming City Wall (600 years old, 35km intact), Sun Yat-sen's marble mausoleum on Purple Mountain, and the Nanjing Massacre Memorial. Luoyang is ancient history; Nanjing is both ancient and modern.

City Atmosphere

Luoyang is a mid-size industrial city (7 million) that doesn't have the polish of a major tourist destination. The old town area is modest. Nanjing (8 million) is a major university city with a more refined atmosphere, better restaurants, and a lively nightlife along the Qinhuai River. Nanjing is more pleasant to stay in; Luoyang is more of a stop-and-see-the-grottoes city.

Logistics

Luoyang is 1.5 hours by high-speed train from Xi'an and 4 hours from Beijing — perfect as a stop between the two. Nanjing is 1.5 hours from Shanghai and 3.5 hours from Beijing — a natural stop on the Beijing-Shanghai corridor. Both are easy to add to standard itineraries.

Our Verdict

Choose Luoyang for Buddhist art (Longmen Grottoes) and Silk Road history. Choose Nanjing for modern Chinese history, city wall walks, and a more livable city atmosphere. If on the Beijing-Xi'an route, add Luoyang; if on the Shanghai route, add Nanjing.

Frequently Asked Questions

1.Which is better to add to a Beijing-Xi'an-Shanghai itinerary?

Both work. Add Luoyang between Beijing and Xi'an (it's 1.5h from Xi'an). Add Nanjing between Beijing and Shanghai (it's 1.5h from Shanghai). If you can only add one, Luoyang's Longmen Grottoes are a more unique attraction.

2.Is the Nanjing Massacre Memorial suitable for children?

The memorial is graphic and somber. It is appropriate for teenagers studying history but may be too intense for young children. The outdoor sections are less graphic than the indoor exhibition halls.

3.When is the Luoyang Peony Festival?

Mid-April is peak bloom. The city transforms with millions of peonies in bloom — it's been a tradition since the Tang Dynasty. Hotels book up early for this period.
