Direct answers, operational cautions and primary sources where available. Time-sensitive pages show when they were last reviewed.
Entry
Do I need a visa to visit China?
It depends on your passport, trip length and exact route. You may need an L tourist visa, qualify for a nationality-based exemption, or meet every condition of China's 240-hour visa-free transit program.
What is China's 240-hour visa-free transit program?
It can allow eligible travelers to remain in approved areas for up to 10 days while transiting to a third country or region. It is not a general ten-day visa exemption.
Can I use China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy on a round trip?
A simple return journey such as London–Beijing–London normally does not satisfy the third-country-or-region transit condition. A route such as London–Beijing–Tokyo may qualify if your passport, arrival port, onward ticket and permitted travel area meet every current rule.
What counts as a third country or region for China's visa-free transit policy?
It is the confirmed destination you travel to after leaving mainland China, and it must differ from the country or region from which you arrived. The rule is based on your actual international itinerary, not your nationality or home address.
Payments
Can international visitors use Alipay in China?
Many international visitors can register Alipay and link eligible foreign bank cards, but verification, card support, transaction limits and merchant acceptance can vary.
How should tourists pay in China?
Prepare at least two methods: a mobile-payment wallet linked to an eligible card, plus a backup bank card or cash option. Do not depend on a single app.
Do international tourists still need cash in China?
Carry a modest amount of renminbi as a backup even if you plan to use Alipay or Weixin Pay. Mobile payments are widespread, but account verification, foreign-card support, network access or an individual transaction can still fail.
Connectivity
Transport
How far ahead should I book China train tickets?
Sales windows and ticket rules can change, so check China Railway 12306 for your travel date. For peak holidays and popular routes, prepare passenger details early and book when sales open.
Can international visitors buy China train tickets online?
Yes. International travelers can use China Railway's English 12306 service or eligible booking platforms, subject to identity verification, payment support and current sales rules.
How should I enter my passport name for a China train ticket?
Use the name shown in the machine-readable passport you will carry, following the character and length rules displayed by the official booking service. Do not substitute a nickname or another passport.
Planning
What is the best first-time China itinerary?
For many first-time visitors with about eight days, Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai is the clearest introduction: imperial history, the Terracotta Warriors and contemporary urban China connected largely by high-speed rail.
How many days do I need for a first trip to China?
Eight to twelve days is a useful range for a first trip covering three or four places. Five to seven days usually works better with only one or two bases.
How much should I budget for a China trip?
For planning rather than quoting, separate international flights, intercity transport, accommodation, food, admissions, local transport and guide services. The same route can vary widely by season, hotel standard, group size and how much is booked privately.
Which public holidays should I avoid when traveling in China?
The highest-pressure periods are usually the Spring Festival travel season and the National Day holiday around early October. Transport, major attractions and hotels can be much busier, while exact statutory holiday dates are announced for each year.
Destinations
Should I visit Beijing or Shanghai first?
Choose Beijing first for the Great Wall and imperial history; choose Shanghai first for an easier international-city arrival, food, design and convenient Yangtze Delta day trips.
Should I choose Guilin or Zhangjiajie?
Choose Guilin and Yangshuo for river scenery, countryside and a flexible pace; choose Zhangjiajie for more dramatic mountain views, hiking and intensive park logistics.
Safety
Is China safe for solo international travelers?
Many travelers experience low levels of violent street crime, but normal precautions still matter. The more common challenges are scams, traffic, language barriers, payment access and obtaining help without familiar apps.
Should I buy travel insurance for China?
Travel insurance is strongly worth considering for medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip interruption, cancellations and lost belongings. The right cover depends on your health, activities, residence and itinerary.
