Chengdu is China's laid-back capital of pandas, peppercorns, and teahouses. Visit the Panda Breeding Base at feeding time, stand beneath the world's largest stone Buddha at Leshan, and hike the Buddhist trails of Mount Emei. Add a hotpot dinner that will redefine your understanding of 'spicy'.

Early morning visit to the Giant Panda Breeding Base (best time to see them active and feeding). Afternoon: Wuhou Temple and Jinli Ancient Street. Evening: Sichuan Opera with face-changing show.

Drive to Leshan (2 hours). View the 71-meter Buddha from a river boat, then climb the cliff stairs to see it from above. Return to Chengdu.

Drive to Mount Emei. Visit Baoguo Temple, then take a bus to Wannian Temple. Hike through monkey-inhabited forests to Qingyin Pavilion.

Cable car to the Golden Summit (3,077m) — sea of clouds, golden Buddha statues. Descend in afternoon. Return to Chengdu.
Overnight: Chengdu 4-star hotel
Morning: visit a traditional teahouse in Renmin Park — experience Chengdu's signature slow living. Afternoon: Wide and Narrow Alleys (Kuanzhai Xiangzi) for shopping and snacks. Farewell dinner.
