For distances under 800 km, high-speed train is almost always better: faster door-to-door, more comfortable, and often cheaper. For longer distances, flying is usually more practical. No. China does not recognize international driving permits or foreign licenses. To drive legally, you must convert your license to a Chinese license, which requires a written test (available in English in some cities). For tourists, we strongly recommend using private drivers, taxis, or ride-hailing apps instead. Self-driving is not practical for short-term visitors.

The official booking platform is 12306.cn (or its app), which has an English version. Trip.com also sells train tickets with a small service fee for foreigners. Book as early as possible, as tickets sell out quickly during holidays. Your passport is your ticket; there are no paper tickets. You scan your passport at the turnstile to enter the platform.

High-speed trains offer Second Class (2+3 seating, comfortable), First Class (2+2 seating, more legroom), and Business Class (lie-flat seats, premium service). Regular trains have Hard Seat (basic), Soft Seat (comfortable), Hard Sleeper (6-berth open compartments), and Soft Sleeper (4-berth closed compartments). No. Uber sold its China operations to DiDi in 2016. DiDi is the dominant ride-hailing app in China and has an English interface. It works similarly to Uber: enter your pickup and destination, the app shows the fare, and you pay through the app. DiDi is available in all major cities and most smaller towns.

Each passenger can bring up to 20 kg (44 lbs) of luggage for free on high-speed trains, and 35 kg on regular trains. The sum of the three dimensions of each piece should not exceed 160 cm for high-speed trains. There are overhead racks and luggage compartments at the end of each carriage.
