China's seaside city with German DNA — red-roofed villas, the original Tsingtao Brewery, and beaches on the Shandong coast.
Qingdao is the city where China and Germany collided for 17 years (1898-1914), and the legacy is visible in every red-tiled roof and cobblestone lane. The Old Town's colonial architecture, the Lutheran church on Zhejiang Road, and the Governor's Residence all date from the German lease period. The Tsingtao Brewery, also founded by Germans in 1903, is now the world's second-largest beer brand — and you can tour it. Qingdao's coastline offers beaches (Number 1 Bathing Beach in summer is packed, but the less crowded Silver Beach is better), and Laoshan Mountain east of the city mixes Taoist temples with sea views.
