Nanjing

南京

Nanjing

China's ancient southern capital — where Ming emperors ruled, Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum stands, and the City Wall has survived 600 years.

About Nanjing

Nanjing means 'Southern Capital,' and for centuries it was exactly that. The first Ming emperor built his palace here in the 14th century, and the massive City Wall he constructed still stands — one of the longest ancient city walls in the world. Sun Yat-sen's mausoleum climbs the slopes of Purple Mountain in white marble steps. The Memorial Hall of the Nanjing Massacre is a somber but essential visit. Nanjing is also a university city with a lively nightlife scene along the Qinhuai River, where lantern-lit boats glide past traditional architecture.
