Lijiang

A UNESCO Naxi minority old town of waterways, wooden houses, and snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — China's most romantic destination.

About Lijiang

Lijiang Old Town is a maze of cobblestone lanes, wooden bridges, and flowing canals that have earned it UNESCO World Heritage status. Built by the Naxi people — whose matriarchal society and Dongba pictographic writing are living cultural treasures — the old town is stunningly beautiful, especially at dawn when mist rises from the rooftops and before the day-trip crowds arrive. Above the town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5,596m) dominates every view. Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the world's deepest canyons, is a 2-day hike away. Lijiang can be touristy, but wake up at 6am and you'll have the old town to yourself.
