Kunming

The City of Eternal Spring — mild weather year-round, 1,900m altitude, and the gateway to Yunnan's ethnic minority heartland.

About Kunming

Kunming is Yunnan's capital and the launching point for almost every Yunnan itinerary. At 1,900m elevation, it has the spring-like climate the rest of China dreams of — 15-25°C year-round, with azaleas blooming in spring and camellias in winter. The city itself is pleasant rather than spectacular: Green Lake Park (Cuihu) is the social heart where locals gather for morning exercise, tea, and bird-watching. But Kunming's real value is strategic — from here you can reach the Stone Forest, Dali, Lijiang, and Yuanyang rice terraces by high-speed rail or short flights.
