The Song Dynasty capital that was — a city of imperial ruins, Jewish heritage, and the world's most famous painted scroll.
Kaifeng was the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), when it was the most populous and prosperous city on Earth. Today, the imperial palace is gone (buried under Yellow River floods), but the Iron Pagoda (1049 AD) still stands — a 55-meter brick tower that looks like iron but isn't. Kaifeng was also home to a small Jewish community that arrived via the Silk Road in the 12th century and survived for 700 years before assimilating. The Millennium City Park recreates the Northern Song capital based on the famous painting 'Along the River During the Qingming Festival.' Kaifeng's food scene, especially its night market, is one of the best in Henan.
