Hongcun

An ox-shaped Ming Dynasty village near Huangshan — white walls, black tiles, and a reflecting pond that mirrors the sky.

About Hongcun

Hongcun is a 900-year-old village at the foot of Huangshan Mountain, designed in the shape of an ox — with a hill as the head, two ancient trees as horns, and a moon-shaped pond as the stomach. The village's white-walled, black-tiled Hui architecture, reflected in the still water of Moon Pond (Yuetang), creates one of the most photographed scenes in China. Hongcun was a filming location for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The village's water system, engineered in the 15th century, channels mountain water through every household's front door — a feat of ancient urban planning.
