凤凰
A 1,300-year-old Miao minority town on the Tuojiang River — stilt houses, stone bridges, and mist that inspired Shen Congwen's novels.
Fenghuang (Phoenix Ancient Town) is one of China's most atmospheric towns. Built along the banks of the Tuojiang River in western Hunan, its wooden stilt houses (diaojiaolou) overhang the water, connected by stone bridges and narrow alleyways. The town is a center of Miao and Tujia minority culture — women in traditional indigo-dyed clothing sell silver jewelry and embroidered textiles in the market. The writer Shen Congwen, born here in 1902, captured the town's melancholy beauty in his novels. At night, red lanterns reflect in the river, and the town's bars and cafes come alive. Fenghuang is touristy but still magical, especially in the early morning mist.
