Old vs New

Urumqi is China's most remote major city — a modern metropolis of glass towers and wide boulevards, 2,500 km from Beijing. Its highlight is the Xinjiang Museum, home to the Tarim mummies and Silk Road artifacts. Kashgar, by contrast, has been a trading post for 2,000 years. Its Old City was partially demolished and rebuilt, but the remaining alleys, mud-brick houses, and craft workshops still feel like stepping into Central Asia.

Culture and Markets

Kashgar's Sunday Market is legendary — one of the largest outdoor markets in Asia, where Uyghur farmers trade livestock, carpets, knives, and spices. The Grand Bazaar in Urumqi is more tourist-oriented. Kashgar also has the Id Kah Mosque, China's largest, and the Abakh Khoja Tomb. Urumqi's cultural sites are mostly in museums rather than living neighborhoods.
