Beaches and Resorts

Sanya's Yalong Bay has 7km of white sand, clear water, and China's best luxury resorts — Ritz-Carlton, Mandarin Oriental, Edition. The water is warm enough to swim year-round. Xiamen's beaches are urban — Baicheng Beach near Xiamen University is pleasant but not world-class. Xiamen's appeal is more about the island atmosphere than the beaches themselves.

Culture and Character

Xiamen has far more cultural depth. Gulangyu Island — a car-free former foreign concession with colonial villas, piano museums, and seaside walks — is a UNESCO site. Xiamen University is one of China's most beautiful campuses. The city has a relaxed, livable feel. Sanya is essentially a resort enclave with little traditional culture; the Binglanggu Li and Miao Cultural Park is the main cultural attraction.

Food and Value

Xiamen's food scene is outstanding — oyster omelets, satay noodles, spring rolls, and some of China's freshest seafood at the Eighth Market. Sanya's food is more resort-oriented, with high prices for mediocre hotel buffets. Local Hainanese food (Wenchang chicken, coconut rice) is good but harder to find outside local restaurants. Xiamen offers far better value.

Our Verdict

Choose Sanya for a beach resort vacation with warm water year-round. Choose Xiamen for a cultural coastal city with better food and character. They serve different purposes — Sanya is for relaxation, Xiamen is for exploration.
