Architecture and Setting

Fenghuang's stilt houses (diaojiaolou) line both banks of the Tuo River, creating one of China's most iconic images. The town is larger and more sprawling than Hongcun, with narrow stone alleys climbing the hillside. Hongcun is a compact village of white-walled, dark-tiled Hui-style mansions arranged around a moon-shaped pond (Yuezhao). The backdrop of Huangshan mountain makes Hongcun's setting more dramatic.

Culture and Atmosphere

Fenghuang is a Miao ethnic minority town — you will see women in traditional silver jewelry and embroidered clothing, hear Miao singing, and can visit nearby Miao villages. The town was home to writer Shen Congwen, whose stories capture rural Hunan life. Hongcun is Han Chinese, with culture centered around Hui merchant traditions — wood carvings, ancestral halls, and the art of feng shui in village layout.
