Coastline and Beaches

Dalian's coastline is longer and more varied than Qingdao's, with rocky coves, sandy beaches, and cliffside boardwalks. Bangchuidao and Golden Pebble Beach are the highlights. The water is cleaner and less crowded. Qingdao's beaches (Number 1 through Number 6) are urban and can be packed in July-August, but the coastal boardwalk from Zhanqiao Pier to Badaguan is one of China's most beautiful seaside walks.

Architecture and Beer

Qingdao wins on both architecture and beer. The German old town around Badaguan has red-roofed villas, cobblestone streets, and the former Governor's Residence. Tsingtao beer is world-famous, and the Tsingtao Beer Museum is excellent. Dalian has Russian-style buildings on Zhongshan Square and Japanese-era architecture, but they are more scattered and less cohesive than Qingdao's German quarter.

Food and Nightlife

Both cities excel at seafood. Dalian is known for sea cucumber, abalone, and grilled oysters. Qingdao's signature is spicy clams (gala) washed down with fresh draft beer served in plastic bags — a uniquely Qingdao experience. Dalian's nightlife is more low-key; Qingdao has a livelier bar scene around the beer street.
